Basketball story isn’t just for kids

Basketball story isn’t just for kids

"Stealing the Game" by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld, $16.99, 293 pages.

Oh, how you hate to lose!

You hate it so much, in fact, that it’s not really an option. You’ll do anything and work hardest to make sure that you’re not finishing last.

It’s all or nothing for you, and in the new book “Stealing the Game” by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld, it’s about more than how you play the game.

Everyone at Orangetree Middle School knew that 13-year-old Chris Richards was someone they could trust, a decent-enough student, but kind of quiet.

Even Chris himself would admit that, and he was OK with it. He always thought his observation skills were better than anything else he did, except maybe basketball.

Yep, Chris was a good kid. So it came as a huge surprise to everyone when a cop came to algebra class and escorted him to the principal’s office.

The whole mess started four days earlier.

Jax, Chris’s older brother was the “Golden Boy.” Always likeable, good-hearted, smart, capable and responsible, Jax had spent the last year at Stanford University on a full scholarship, studying to being a lawyer.

The Richards — both lawyers — were proud of him, but when Jax came home and announced that he’d quit school, well, it was like World War III had started in the living room.

Chris had always looked up to Jax, and Jax’s behavior didn’t make sense. Then again, in Chris’s world, not much did.

Girls were a total mystery, teachers were a surprise, and most of his classes were a struggle. But basketball, now that made sense. For Chris, the only thing better than a good pickup game was drawing comics.

Ever since his parents started pushing Chris toward college, he wished he could tell them that being a comic book artist was what he wanted to do someday. He loved comics, loved collecting them, and he loved imagining ways his own main character, Master Thief, could save the world.

But Master Thief couldn’t save Jax. Jax, in fact, was in big trouble and he needed Chris’s help with a real burglary.

Jax, you see, had a secret life, too.

Ka-thunk-ka-thunk-ka-thunk. If you’ve got a basketball fan around, that’s a familiar sound at your house. But you’ll silence that sound for a few hours, if you can swap the ball for this book.

More than just a basketball novel, “Stealing the Game” is also a mystery, solved by a sharp, smart, funny, and genuinely nice 13-year-old.

The real Dream Team of Abdul-Jabbar and Obstfeld introduces readers to that kind of kid, the one you wish your kids would hang out with, but while Chris Richards is surely the star here, the whole rest of the cast of this story appealed to me, too. And the book’s Big Reveal? It’s perfect. Three points.

Another nice thing: There’s a strong girl basket-baller here as well, which means this isn’t just a book for boys. Actually, it’s not just a book for kids, either: For anybody, any age, “Stealing the Game” is a win.

Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old, and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 11,000 books.

J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy” miniseries unveils trailer (video)

J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy” miniseries unveils trailer (video)

J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy” miniseries unveils trailerPanARMENIAN.Net – The first full trailer for HBO’s upcoming miniseries “The Casual Vacancy” based on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s book of the same name, has hit the Web — and Potter fans shouldn’t expect anything to be like Hogwarts, Variety reports.

The book and three-part miniseries follows a small town after a community leader dies without an obvious replacement for his seat on the committee. Plenty of drama follows, including town fights, murder and even a possible ghost.

Harry Potter fans should be pleased to see Michael Gambon in the trailer; he played Dumbledore in the magical series and serves in a central role in the HBO drama, but that’s where the similarities between Rowling’s works end. “The Casual Vacancy” was published in September 2012, marking first adult fiction novel after completing the six-book Harry Potter series.

“Cuckoo’s Calling,” another post-Potter novel of Rowling’s, will also hit the smallscreen, with the BBC announcing the TV adaptation in December. Rowling is also writing the screenplay for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a feature adaptation of her book set in the Harry Potter universe (though without the typical characters) that Warner Bros. will release in 2016.

Parts one and two of “The Casual Vacancy” will air on HBO on April 29. Part three will air April 30.

Austin & Ally and Minecraft among Kids’ Choice Awards winners

Austin & Ally and Minecraft among Kids’ Choice Awards winners

KidsChoiceAwards2015

With a record-breaking 500 million votes cast from kids around the world, Saturday’s 28th Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in L.A. was a slime-filled spectacle honoring fan favorites including winners Jennifer Lawrence, SpongeBob SquarePants, One Direction and Nick Jonas.

Hosted by recording artist/actor and newly crowned KCA winner for favorite male singer Nick Jonas, the awards ceremony dished out orange blimps across 21 categories in film, TV, music, video games and books.

Winners were also announced in four new categories— favorite talent competition show, favorite family TV show, most addicting game and favorite new artist—plus a special live vote was held and won by the cast of Nick’s live-action comedy The Thundermans.

With seven million live votes, The Thundermans beat the casts of Bella and the Bulldogs and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn and received the honor of taking part in the KCA’s first-ever human slime car wash.

Nickelodeon once again leveraged its multiplatform reach by letting fans vote across Nick.com, the The Nick App on iOS, Kindle and Android mobile devices, and via Nick’s Twitter feed and Facebook page.

Nick Digital platforms also provided exclusive real-time updates and photos from the orange carpet and backstage.

Jennifer Lawrence’s star continues to shine as the A-lister won the favorite female action star award for the second year in a row and her latest Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 snapped up the KCA for favorite movie.

However, Lawrence didn’t repeat as favorite movie actress. That title was taken this year by The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Emma Stone.

Disney snapped up the favorite animated movie award for its Oscar-winning Big Hero 6, the highest-grossing animated film of 2014.

In the television category, long-running Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants won favorite cartoon just as it did last year, and Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally had a big night with three wins—favorite kids TV show, favorite TV actor (Ross Lynch) and favorite TV actress (Laura Marano).

New TV awards went to The Voice for favorite talent competition show and Modern Family for favorite family TV show.

Despite the recent dramatic exit of member Zayn Malik, fans continued to show their love for boy band One Direction, voting them favorite music group for the third year in a row.

Girl group Fifth Harmony won for favorite new artist while the always popular Selena Gomez grabbed the favorite female singer KCA after winning it last year, too.

Rounding out the awards, the phenomenally successful interactive property Minecraft was voted most addicting game, and favorite book went to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Fun April Fool’s Day Food Pranks for All

Fun April Fool’s Day Food Pranks for All

I’m not a fan of most April Fool’s Day jokes, but I can’t resist cute, edible food pranks to “fool” my children. Most of my ideas are from the pages of Family Fun magazine, a publication I can’t recommend enough if you have kids.

Fun April Fool's Day Pranks for All! These edible ideas will have both kids and adults smiling. Includes allergy-friendly and vegan options!

Sunny Side Up Egg Food Prank

Serve them this tasty breakfast and see how quickly they spot that the “egg” is made with dairy-free vanilla yogurt and an apricot half! To make this food prank, thoroughly stir the yogurt (for a smooth egg white) and carefully spread it in a circle on a plate. Then place a canned apricot half carefully in the middle. Family Fun recommends a canned peach half for the yolk, but I think a canned apricot half is more proportional. I’ve seen people make pound cake “toast” to go with it, but I stuck with regular dairy-free bread for the side. Allergy Note: Be sure to pick a dairy-free yogurt that is safe for any other allergy needs in your family.

Worm in an Apple Food Prank

Pack an apple with a worm in it for your child’s lunch! This one is more obvious, but tasty and fun nonetheless. With a paring knife or apple corer, make a worm-sized hole in the side of the apple. Brush the exposed apple flesh with lemon juice, and insert a gummy worm. The worm stays in best if secured with a toothpick, but be sure the person eating the apple knows it has a toothpick in it! Otherwise, you can use a broken spaghetti noodle to secure it. Allergy and Vegan Diet Note: Choose allergy-friendly and gelatin-free gummy worms like Surf Sweets and Organic Candy Factory.

Sushi Candy Food Prank

Sushi for dessert? Why not! Make a half batch of dairy-free rice crispy treats but leave them in the saucepan. Lay out four fruit roll ups. Divide the rice crispy mixture among the four roll ups and press it flat, as you would sushi rice. Place one long or several small fruit gummies in the center of the rice crispies and roll up as you would a sushi roll. Slice into rounds and serve. I used all natural fruit twists for the centers of the sushi, but I must admit that traditional fruit roll ups work better for the outer wrap than all-natural ones do. They are thinner and stickier. Allergy and Vegan Diet Note: Use dairy-free, non-hydrogenated margarine to make your crispy treats and choose Dandies marshmallows and Surf Sweets gummy bears for vegan.

Deceptive Drinks Food Pranks

Last but not least, I have three fun drink ideas for a fool’s dinner include “juice” and two types of dairy-free milk.

For the juice (pictured on the left), mix 100% juice (I used a cranberry blend) and gelatin using the directions on the gelatin box. The gelatin needs to be the “jiggler” or “Knox Blox” thickness so that it stays secure in the glass. Pour the “juice” into glasses and let chill until dinner. This makes about 4 glasses of juice, depending on the cup size.

For true blue milk (pictured in the center), just add a few drops of all-natural food coloring to your favorite dairy-free milk beverage.

For undrinkable “milk” (pictured on the right), try this fun idea that was inspired by Catherine Newman (who writes for Family Fun). Dissolve 1 packet of plain gelatin in 1/2 cup boiling water, stirring until it’s really dissolved, then stir in 3/4 cup refrigerated coconut milk beverage (in a carton, not canned), 2 tablespoons cream of coconut, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a dash of salt. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This about two glasses of quick, tasty panna cotta “milk”, depending on the cup size, which they’ll end up enjoying for dessert!

Allergy and Vegan Diet Note: Be sure to pick a milk beverage that is safe for all of your allergen needs. To make these food pranks vegan, use Clear Jel or a vegan gelatin dessert like Jeannie Prebiotics.
