‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ brings the gang back (except for Will Smith)

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ brings the gang back (except for Will Smith)

It’s been nearly 20 years since Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and company saved planet Earth from bully aliens in 1996’s Independence Day, one of the biggest box office hits of all time.

Not so surprisingly, it seems like everyone’s coming back for more as the trailer for Roland Emmerich’s sequel Independence Day: Resurgence dropped Sunday.

Aliens want more delicious Earth. President Thomas J. Whitmore (Pullman) is back with a crazy big beard because he’s having bad alien dreams after defeating them last time. That has likely been a problem for re-election.

Genius David Levinson (Goldblum) is back looking REALLY freaked out again. Even Judd Hirsch is back and having his boat trip disrupted.

Okay, so the biggest movie star of them all in Smith is taking a powder on this Earth invasion. The guy simply cannot be expected to stop every alien when he’s going for Oscars.

But this new one’s got Liam Hemsworth, and he’s now officially only walking in slow motion as hotshot Jake Morrison for this trailer. And Resurgence has got a moon base which we apparently built after the last time the aliens invaded.

And you can expect the effects to be bigger for the new film opening June 24 since special effects have come a long way (even if the last one won an Oscar for best visual effects).

To further emphasize this, the spacesuit-wearing Levinson says to new BFF Morrison: “This is definitely bigger than the last one.”

Not subtle at all.

British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who rocketed to fame in the “Harry Potter” films, said Thursday he was “in awe” as he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“A few months ago, I was walking along here with a couple of friends and just becoming sort of in awe and slightly overwhelmed by the names I was going to be joining,” said the 26-year-old, who was presented with the 2,565th star.

“Growing up in England, you hear the word Hollywood and right after, you picture the sign on the hill, you picture these stars.”

Radcliffe, who played the boy wizard in the wildly popular eight-film blockbuster Potter franchise before moving on to more adult roles, was in Los Angeles to promote his new movie Victor Frankenstein.

In the film, which opens in the United States later this month, he plays assistant Igor to the mad scientist obsessed with creating life, portrayed by James McAvoy.

Radcliffe is one of the rare child stars to have successfully maintained his career as he moved into adulthood.

He has starred in a number of films since finishing up as Potter, including The Woman in Black and Kill Your Darlings. He also had a cameo in this year’s comedy hit Trainwreck.

Radcliffe has appeared on Broadway, notably in the musical comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and the psycho-drama Equus, in which he stunned fans by disrobing on stage.

Update brings Live Photos and 3D Touch support to Tumblr’s iOS app

Update brings Live Photos and 3D Touch support to Tumblr’s iOS app

Tumblr for iOS now supports sharing Live Photos & 3D Touch

Live Photos is offered only on the Apple iPhone 6s or Apple iPhone 6s Plus, and using iMessage, they can be zapped between owners of the two newest iPhone models.

Most importantly, iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can now share their Live Photos on Tumblr in all their Harry Potter wizardry. An update to microblogging app Tumblr now brings support for the feature, along with support for 3D Touch.

Apple’s Live Photos have largely been stuck inside the iPhone 6S’s camera roll since the day the phone launched, but they’re slowly turning into something you can actually share. “That’s how you spot ’em”. While Tumblr does support Live Photos, they’re only viewable within its iOS app. Other updates to the Tumblr app include the ability to send a post to any Tumblr user and messaging. You can share a Live Photo to Tumblr just like a standard photo. On Tumblr’s Android app, Live Photos show up as a frozen image. Deep pressing the Tumblr icon on the homepage will surface a Quick Action shortcut to search through Tumblr.

When browsing Tumblr, you’ll recognize Live Photos by the same standard icon in the top right corner. iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can 3D Touch (press the display firmly) to animate the photo and hear audio playback.

This Will Change How You See Darth Vader Forever

This Will Change How You See Darth Vader Forever

“You see that he’s just a big vulnerable sad sack underneath that black helmet”

Oscar Isaac takes on the role of Poe Dameron, a X-wing pilot in the Resistance and a leader in the fight against the First Order, in the hotly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the J.J. Abrams-directed film is shrouded in secrecy, Isaac recently sat down with TIME to discuss what the Star Wars series has meant to him throughout his life and his own analysis of his character’s journey.

TIME: What’s your personal history with Star Wars? Were you a fan? Did you see the movies in the theater? What were your feelings about Star Wars before this?

Isaac: For me, it’s been a huge part of my childhood and actually, recent life. My family and I are all pretty big fans. The earliest movie I can remember seeing in the theater was Return of the Jedi and I went with my father and it made a huge impression on me, particularly when Darth Vader’s helmet comes off. You see that he’s just a big vulnerable sad sack underneath that black helmet and how fragile he is and what it says about the way that we look up to our parents sometimes and once we realize that they’re just human. Anyway, that stuck with me a lot and I was a huge fan. It just ignited my imagination in a way I couldn’t have imagined and then as I grew up, my family were huge fans, particularly my uncle and cousins, and they would collect the toys and we’d rewatch the movies. Then when the prequels came out, we were very excited and we would throw Star Wars-themed parties and collect the toys and dress up as the characters and actually memorize the fight scenes, the duels. We’d try to reenact them with the lightsabers, but to a T. You know, say, “okay no no no he goes left, right, left, right and then down.” So yeah, it was always a great way for the family to spend some time annoying the rest of the family.

What can you tell me about the character?

I can say that he’s a pilot for the Resistance. He’s incredibly dedicated. He’s perhaps sometimes a little overenthusiastic with wanting to prove himself as a pilot and so can sometimes find himself in slightly reckless situations, in situations that he maybe didn’t anticipate. So I think part of his journey is figuring out what a real leader is, what it means to be a leader, what it means to be a hero, and yet he’s a formidable opponent to the First Order.
