Warner Bros’ could be a step closer to assembling a cast for its “Minecraft” film, with Varietyreporting Steve Carell is in talks to star.

While we don’t have plot details for the film yet, the project is based on the popular video game which allows players to create avatars and build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world.

Rob McElhenney will direct from a script by “Wonder Woman” scribe Jason Fuchs.

The movie has been slated to open on May 25, 2019.

The long anticipated pic will be produced by Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Jon Lee, as well as the late Jill Messick.

Based on the globally popular video game, the story follows a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.

Peter Sollett, best known as the director of 2002’s “Raising Victor Vargas” and  “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” (2008), has been tapped to write and direct a film based on the game “Minecraft” for Warner Bros.

In previous years, Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney were attached to direct, as well as Steve Carrell, who was circling a role in the film.

Variety‘ first reported the news.

According to the latest report, Visual Effects Supervisor Jim Berney (I Am Legend, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) has joined the production crew of Warner Bros’ upcoming Minecraft: The Movie…

Minecraft: The Movie has found its visual effects supervisor in Jim Berney, as the acclaimed artist has joined the production crew of the upcoming Warner Bros. video game movie, according to Discussing Film. Berney previously worked on many high-profile films, including The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Eagle Eye, The Polar Express, Green Lantern, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and James Wan’s Aquaman.

The video game adaptation was originally scheduled for release in May, with actor and director Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo) at the helm, but he has left the project, just like Minecraft: The Movie’s original director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Stranger Things). The film’s latest draft was written by Aaron and Adam Nee, the directors of Sony’s Masters of the Universe movie.

Current reporting seems to be assuming that Minecraft: The Movie is going to be a live-action project with Steve Carell (The Office, The Big Short) in the lead role, but WB. had no comment on the casting.

Minecraft debuted in 2009, allowing players to create their own avatars and build complex structures using textured cubes in a 3D environment. Since its release, Minecraft sales have reached an all-time high with 144 million copies having been sold across all platforms with over 74 million monthly players. Microsoft acquired game developer Mojang and the rights to Minecraft for $2.5 billion in 2016.
