Privacy

This page says what stonemarshall.com collects and why. We don’t sell it, and we don’t use it for advertising.

Reading the site

  • Visit counts. Cloudflare Web Analytics and Jetpack Stats count visits: the page viewed, the site that sent you, your country, browser and device type, and how fast the page loaded. We use them only as totals, not to identify you or follow you to other sites. Reading pages sets no cookies.
  • Technical records. Our web host keeps basic records of each request (the page, the time, your IP address and browser type) to keep the site secure and working.
  • Other companies’ pieces. Some pages load fonts from Google Fonts or a book picture from Amazon, so those companies see the visit, under their own privacy policies.

When you do something

  • Bookstore links. When you click a link to a bookstore, we record the click (the link, the time, your IP address, browser, device, country and the page you came from) to see which stores readers use. Two small cookies remember the click, one for 30 days and one for a year.
  • Newsletter and puzzles. If you sign up, we keep your email address to send you Stone Marshall news and puzzles, until you unsubscribe with the link in every email.
  • Comments. If you leave a comment, we keep your name, email address, website and IP address with it, and Akismet checks it for spam.
  • Polls. If you vote in a poll, a cookie remembers your vote for a year.
  • Email. If you write to [email protected], we keep your message to answer you.

Who else sees it

Only the companies that run the site and its email for us, each for that job alone: Cloudflare (the site’s network and visit counts), Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com (Jetpack Stats and Akismet), and Amazon’s email service. And authorities, when the law requires it.

Young readers

Stone Marshall’s books are for young readers, so the sign-ups ask only for an email address, and it should be a parent’s. If a child under 13 signed up on their own, write to us and we delete it.

Your choices

Write to [email protected] to see, correct or delete what we hold about you. We reply within 45 days.
